Every now and then, a new concept is developed that significantly changes the world and improves the quality of our lives. We feel we have discovered several ways to dramatically reduce the number of accidents to children at home. Our approach centers on effective training of children and their parents.
The current approach to safety training is has an “institutional approach” style of training – boring! There are some attempts to make safety fun for kids by making it into a game or puzzle. This approach lacks applicability to the real world where a child can apply the game.
Effective safety training is reaching the children with a message they can understand and apply. Giving the kids training is great, but if they forget about it a week or two; we really haven't helped them very much. We believe we know how to teach safety so that kids will apply safety training and they will remember it.
Accidents to children at home are almost invisible and yet it is the greatest single threat they face. The success of our effort with improving child safety, can affect the lives and well being of millions of children in the United States and throughout the world.
The goal at Safety-Smart-Kids is to provide the parent with the skills to raise a child who is trained in safety in such a way that they can live a safer life.
Home accidents are the single greatest threat to children, yet the truth is hidden. The stories in the news don't accurately reveal the magnitude of this problem in American homes.
Accidents generally show up in the news as an isolated event. When a death or serious injury occurs, we may read a short story about it in the newspaper or hear a short report on TV.
If parents only knew!
Accidents at home to children are a major news story, yet we don't read about it. The individual accidents are lost in the main stream news. They may occur in a farm town somewhere in Kansas or in a small apartment in New York City.
For the families and friends connected to an accident that occurs to a child they love; the injury to that child becomes “the center of their universe".
Most home accidents can be prevented!
There is a way to stop accidents at home. There has been some great progress over the last 20 years with some of the new safety programs.
However, "home accidents" continues to hold the position as the number "one" cause of death of children. Injuries number in the millions on an annual bases.
In order for child safety to make a significant gain, the child will become part of a joint parent-child safety team that will change the future of the child because they will know understand and apply safety to everything they do!
Anything is possible if can we can dream it and I believe that this dream can become reality for millions of children. Every child deserves a chance for a normal healthy life and without safety skills, many of them will be denied the opportunity.
In the United States, everyday there are 10,000 children that receive medical care from home accidents. The experts say up 90% of these are preventable through improvements in home safety. Everyday there are approximately 7 funerals for children from home accidents. There will be 7 tomorrow, and then next day, and the day after until we do something.
The Truth Is Hidden!
Twice as many children have died from accidents at home than soldiers have died in the Iraq War during the same period of time. Where is the outcry from anyone! Where are the marches or protests? Where is the voice of caring citizens? Where is the media? There is a great silence that leaves our children unprotected and vulnerable!
Parents need help because their children are at risk and they just don’t know it. Child safety at home is way down on the list of "things to do" for most parents because they simply just don't understand. A recent survey revealed that parents feel safest at home; when in fact, more people are hurt at home than in cars.
So the thought, "We are home now, we can relax!” is a dangerous misconception. And when we look at our children's situation it is even worse. Home can be the most dangerous place your kids will ever go!
