MOTIVATION - SAFETY'S SECRET!

Exciting the kids!

Nothing happens unless there is motivation! In safety when we are trying to teach children who may not grasp the significance of a safety lesson it is still possible to "motivate" them to respond to that safety lesson. The "bottom line" on safety is measured with results. If we get the desired behavior, the level of comprehension is not really that important.

Our approach to teaching is based on the concept that we believe can instill safety behavior in kids even though they may not fully comprehend the negative outcome of a safety issue. Consider a safety lesson for a 16 year old when they are learning to drive. They are taught that if they do certain things they can be killed while driving. Does a 16 year old really have a thorough understanding of death? No! Do we teach them safety anyway? Yes! What is missing for these teenagers and for the little kids is motivation. With our CD “Being a Safe Kid”, we believe we have discovered that children will respond safety with the right kind of training.

Most of our current safety programs for children are “guardianship” (watch over the little ones) and “lock up” (lock up everything that might hurt them). There is some teaching here and there for our children, but the entire approach is incomplete because we can’t lock up everything and watch the child every second. If you secure everything in your house and then you visit your Uncle Hardy’s house and the kids go out in the garage and play with matches. Your house is secure but Uncle Hardy doesn’t have any children. You want to visit with Uncle Hardy so you let your child play outside while you are visiting. It is though we treat our children like they don’t have any intelligence. They are, if trained and motivated, in they are in the best position to avoid an injury.

Motivation comes from understanding of the outcome of an accident and then acting on that understanding. How do we motivate kids? Words are just not good enough. Our video, "Being a Safe Kid" is teaching tool that teaches children about safety in way they can apply the lessons.

A picture is worth a thousand words!

We teach motivation 4 ways in our CD, “Being a Safe Kid”:.

1. We teach a simple safety concept.

2. We give them a memory “Verse” to revert to if they are confronted with this safety issue.

3. We provide safety songs with lyrics and “memorable” melodies. (Memorable melodies – remember “White Christmas”? Most people could hum it the first time they ever hear it.)

4. We provide a visual demonstration of the potential accident that relates to our specific safety lesson. We give them action demonstration of how the accident could occur and what the damage might look like.

The visual demonstration is effective for even though the children might not fully comprehend the full implications of the accident, they can still see that they want to avoid the accident. They have motivation to be safe.

Every kid from a very early age understands the “step on the bug” concept. They can see what happens when the ant is stepped on is not good. They can see the ant doesn’t even look like an ant after he has been stepped on, and they usually never move again. So when we show them with our special stunt man the damage that could result from an accident, they have a mental picture – a clear precise – uncomplicated image of the damage. They saw how it happened and they can see how it might happen to them. They hear the song about it and they hear the young hostess repeat the “memory phrase”, and they have it – these kids with regard to this issue are now a “Safety-Smart-Kid” with regard to this training item.

This process, I believe will change the world of safety for children as we know it. Based on feedback, from parents, who have seen our CD, “Being a Safe Kid’, reported significant changes in their children’s behavior (ages 3 to 8 years old) with regard to safety. The critical information is that we, in the process of making this video, may have accidently put together a method of teaching that will reach the minds of children with safety that creates results. If this approach can be brought to the children of this nation using this basic model, and with the production of safety productions to teach these concepts; child safety will see a dramatic improvements.

Reality is a safety requirement!

"We must always be careful!"

Know your environment!

If you consider the consequences of a serious home accident we have every reason to very careful. Somehow the false security of "home sweet home" will lull us into submission to the point that we go "brain dead" and don't apply safety principles.

Safety is easy normally; we just have to think about. With some corrections here and there; we can guide ourselves through the maze of dangers without a scratch. We have the ability to be safe; the question is do we have the motivation? If you are bored with safety, just visit an emergency room.

Spend a few hours and it won't take long for you to see that this is really serious "stuff". Safety is as serious as "death". If you still aren't motivated, what about your children? They are in your hands - should they suffer because you just "don't get it" or because you "don't care"?

Ways to motivate your child!

Being smart really helps!

"Reality training" is the "key" to motivating kids to be safe!
