SAFETY FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES!

DO A SAFETY CHECKUP!

THIS IS A MUST DO!!

A new era in child safety!

YOUR HOME NEEDS A SAFETY CHECK!

What dangers are in your house?

The first step in before starting training is to evaluate- "What is your present level of risk?” What do you really know about safety in the home? What do your children know? How safe is your home?

SAFETY CHECK YOUR HOME!

A home safety evaluation will expose potential problems. A great place for help is the US Consumer Productions Safety Division. They have a 12 step program that will give you a clear picture of your home level of safety.

12 Steps to a safe house!

After you check the house, make the changes that are discovered during the evaluation. Consider asking the local fire department to come look at your home for fire safety. They will usually do this for free. Make sure the kids are home when they come. This is a chance for the kids to learn from professionals. The firmen can be a positive influence on your kids plus the kids can see you are serious about safety!

Without action - safety will disappear!

Get ready!

CONNECT TO GREAT SAFETY SITES!

When we take a look at protecting our kids, we must look at our what we really know. Some of us have have a great deal of training and others none. It is important that no matter where we stand in our level of training, that we need to go to the sources and stay "plugged in" to the sources of information that keeps us and our kids from harm's way. A great web site like the Home Safety Council offers a web site to learn all kinds of great things. Suddenly, your life can be filled with inputs to protect your kids.

Teaching safety for kids requires a small amount of training and a great deal of enthusiasm. Perhaps the greatest teaching tools you have are your actions. Your children will learn from “what you do” more than “what you say”. It is important that you "Practice" what you "Preach". It is also important that you follow up and make sure your kids are being careful. Are they doing what they should be doing? If not, then train them again, if they are, then reward them.

What to teach?

How we teach safety is really important!

There are many different ways teach a child to be careful. As we've already mentioned important you be an example as you do things around the house. There is no one complete and final answer to safety.

So we must be prepared to continue every day as the "leader" in our home. Once your kids know how and why; the job is much easier. Some children will respond to training better than others. There are no guarantees with child safety. Accidents will still happen. The goal is no accidents, but if they do occur , let them be minimal.

Breathing life into safety!

The elements of success!

Perhaps the biggest challenge when it comes to safety is the lack of enthusiasm and excitement to support safety. Our culture tends to promote dangerous activities as evidenced by television movies and other forms of media. As a concerned parent, you have to balance the things your children sees virtually every day on TV or in the movies with reality.

One of the more popular shows of our time is based on home videos. Mostly the videos are harmless, however, some of them absolutely are violent and most assuredly some of the people the viewers are watching were injured.

Violence in media diminishes our perception of danger!

This is entertainment in America today. In order to keep your kids in touch with reality, you need to spend time with them and discuss the difference between what's on TV and real life.

Can we bring about behavioral changes so that children will think and act in a way that reduces injuries? Yes, it is possible, but there are no guarantees. Sometimes the value safety training may come down to a single moment in time.

We can only hope that in the critical moment, the training will surface and the child or teenager, as the years pass, will revert to the fundamentals we taught them.

Safety is for your child's entire life time!

Safety is a life long journey that requires a continual assessment of risk factors. We all, already, do this whether we realize it or not. Unfortunately, most of us are ill equipped to deal with the potential threats that surround us.

You can control your risks only if you know what threatens you and you know what to do about it. Of the children alive in the US today, tens of thousands of kids will die before they become an adult while they are in their own homes!

Are we "ill equipped" to deal with threats?

Millions will feel the pain that comes from home accidents, and many of these will carry the scars and brokenness in their bodies for the rest of their lives. The number of home accidents to children is far greater than it would be if the parents were trained and the parents trained their children.

It is about caring!

Many of us "just don't get it"! Safety is buried on our list. We become our own enemy. "The enemy is us!"

We do it to our children!

Our minds are often irrational when it comes to safety. Once the facts are presented then it is up to us to take action. To a large degree most of the home accidents occur because of the human condition of apathy and neglect.
